Scott Kenneth Homer Bessent was born in August 1962 in Conway, South Carolina. He earned an undergraduate degree from Yale University. He
Bessent went into a financial career, becoming head of the Soros Fund Management’s London office. He founded an investment firm of his own, Key Square Group, in 2015.
Bessent was appointed by President Donald Trump to be the Secretary of the Treasury in November 2024. He was confirmed by the Senate and sworn into office in January 2025.
Bessent is married to John Freeman, and they have two children. He belongs to the Huguenot Church.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently addressed the situation with Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, saying that the strait would ultimately become irrelevant in relation to oil transmission.
Secretary Bessent said in an interview, “The strait is never going back to the way it was because the Iranians have used, or tried to use it, as a choke point.”
“What we are going to see over the next two years, the strait is going to become irrelevant,” Secretary Bessent continued.
The secretary explained, “It is going to become just another body of water, and I would say that more than 50 or 70% of the energy that moves through the strait now is going to go through underground pipelines.”
