The order recommends 11 immunizations, reduced from 18 in 2024.
President Donald Trump was joined by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., as he signed an executive order this week that reduces the recommended number of childhood immunizations.
The president highlighted, “The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) completed a scientific assessment, which identified a set of consensus vaccines that are consistently recommended in all peer countries and found that the United States currently recommends more childhood vaccines than any peer nation, including more than twice as many vaccine doses as some European nations.”
The president’s order “recommends all children get immunizations to provide protection for 11 diseases – a decrease from the 18 diseases recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2024. Immunizations no longer recommended for all children are now recommended for shared clinical decision-making, ensuring that parents have all options available to them.”
The order also recommends that the combined Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) be separated into single-dose shots to be administered in separate visits to provide options for vaccine timing and frequency.
The order also advises states to consider updating their laws and school vaccine requirements under the “Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations.” The order also promotes federal agencies’ sharing of “the best scientific information” with the American public.
