Two Senators had delayed votes on confirming the president’s AG nominee over the fund.
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, who is also President Donald Trump’s nominee to permanently fill the role, issued an order to terminate the anti-weaponization fund. The move comes after Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina cited the settlement fund as the reason for delaying the confirmation vote for the acting AG to permanently fill the role. The fund was part of a settlement with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to compensate those who had been targeted by the government.
Acting AG Blanche stated, “My team and I have met with committee members and Senators over the past several weeks and addressed any concerns or outstanding questions.”
Blanche continued, “We have enjoyed good faith discussions, and as a result issue the following order and update with regard to the May IRS settlement. The Department always welcomes and appreciates productive engagement with all members of Congress.”
President Trump had previously suggested he would pause his nomination of Blanche until the new Congress is seated in January 2027.
