Eleven senators have objected to recessing without a vote on the SAVE America Act.
President Donald Trump pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune to delay the upper chamber’s normal August recess to pass legislative priorities for his administration. The Senate is currently set to recess on August 7.
President Trump stated, “John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town‘ until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER.“ The president said that the filibuster will be removed anyway, should the majority change parties. He advocated for the federal budget and raising the debt ceiling as well.
The president said regarding the funding, “I am asking that the Senate adopt a Budget Resolution, which can pass with a simple Majority, before leaving for the August recess. We are ready to work side-by-side with the Senate to get this done for the American People!”
“If somebody can show me how we get an outcome, how we get a result, how we get an answer to this, I’m all for it,” Senator Thune said. “But if we are going to be sitting here in endless quorum calls, I don’t know if that’s in everybody’s best interest.”
Regarding the SAVE America Act, legislation to require citizenship verification for registered voters, Senators Mike Lee of Utah, Rick Scott and Ashley Moody, both of Florida, Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt, both of Alabama, Jim Banks and Todd Young, both of Indiana, Eric Schmitt of Missouri, Darline Graham of South Carolina, and Bill Hagerty and Marsha Blackburn, both of Tennessee, are insisting on a roll call vote on the measure before recessing.
Senator Lee announced, “I hereby object to any effort to put the Senate into recess in August—at least until such time as the Senate has passed the SAVE America Act—and hereby request a roll call vote.“
Senator Scott stated, “I will vote to stay in session unless we have passed the SAVE America Act. The American people expect us to deliver. They deserve secure elections.“
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For President Trump as he advocates for voter verification and funding legislation.
- For Majority Leader Thune to preside over the Senate with transparency and integrity.
- For members of the Senate as they seek to force a roll call vote on the SAVE America Act.
