Fourth Nuclear Reactor Reaches Criticality Under Energy Department’s Reactor Pilot Program

Energy Secretary Wright
The success of a fourth nuclear reactor demonstration exceeds the president’s original goal of three successful demonstrations by July 4.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) celebrated the fourth nuclear reactor to successfully complete a zero-power fueled criticality demonstration on Independence Day as part of its Reactor Pilot Program. The experiment took place at Idaho National Laboratory and utilized Aalo Atomics’ test reactor, Aalo-X. This success exceeded President Trump’s original goal set in May 2025 to have three reactors achieve this milestone by July 4, 2026.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said, “President Trump asked for three advanced reactors to be authorized and achieve criticality by the 250th anniversary of our great country. I’m pleased to share that through the dedication and hard work of Aalo, INL and DOE, we have surpassed that ask and delivered four!”

Aalo-X joins Antares Nuclear’s Mark-0 reactor, Valar Atomics’ Ward 250, and Deployable Energy’s Unity on the Energy Department’s list of successful advanced reactor designs to reach criticality. The Reactor Pilot Program will continue to promote the construction of new, one-of-a-kind nuclear reactor designs to advance President Trump’s energy agenda.
