The State Department announced that President Donald Trump sent notice to Congress for the removal of Syria from the State Sponsors of Terrorism List. The designation and assignment to this list carry the highest levels of sanctions the U.S. can impose.

President Trump took the action after meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa during the NATO Summit this week. This removal of sanctions on Syria comes as a result of the overthrow of former Syrian dictator Bashar Assad and President Al-Sharaa formally joining a U.S. coalition against the Islamic State.

“Lifting sanctions on Syria will unlock international trade and investment, give Syria a chance to rebuild, and open up a new chapter for the Syrian people. A stable, unified Syria at peace with itself and its neighbors benefits not only the region, but the entire world,“ Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated. “We commend the government of Syria for charting a new course and look forward to enhancing our partnership with Syria and its people.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump as he determines which nations to sanction and which to lift sanctions from.
  • For Secretary Rubio as he oversees the implementation and removal of sanctions.
  • For members of Congress as they consider the transitions in foreign countries that merit changes in relations.
