House Cancels Votes and Recesses for July 4th

The lower chamber was set to vote on legislation Wednesday and Thursday.

Leadership in the House of Representatives canceled votes scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, recessing the lower chamber early, after a group from the majority party blocked a procedural measure to advance the National Defense Authorization Act. The group also stymied plans to advance funding for the State Department and national security.

Speaker Mike Johnson warned some in his party that blocking House business to try and get the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act, election integrity legislation, would be “self-defeating.” The House speaker said he intends to add parts of the SAVE America Act to a budget reconciliation bill later in the year to help avoid the 60 vote threshold in the Senate.

Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida stated that the reconciliation process would not work for the election provisions, since the Byrd Rule requires all measures in reconciliation legislation to be budget-related.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker Johnson to be discerning as he presides over the House of Representatives.
  • For members of both chambers of Congress as they assess the legislation presented to them for a vote.
  • For the Lord to work out His purposes through the actions of U.S. senators and representatives.
