Federal evaluation will examine California’s coastal management practices under long‑standing coastal law.
The Department of Commerce announced that Secretary Howard Lutnick directed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to conduct a formal review of California’s coastal management program under the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA). NOAA oversees state coastal programs and periodically evaluates whether they meet federal requirements related to coastal protection, economic activity, and consideration of federal agency priorities.
“NOAA will conduct its reviews consistent with the plain text of the CZMA, ensuring states give proper weight to economic development and the nation’s priorities,” said Secretary Lutnick.
The review will examine California’s handling of issues involving infrastructure, energy, transportation, offshore projects, and space‑related development, as well as how federal interests have been considered in the state’s coastal process.
NOAA plans to open a public comment period and incorporate stakeholder input when determining future actions regarding certification of California’s program.
