NTSB Holds Hearing on UPS Louisville Plane Crash

The cargo plane killed a total of 15 people after its engine fell off the wing during takeoff.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) held a two-day hearing this week into the United Parcel Service (UPS) cargo plane crash last fall that killed 3 flight crew and 15 people on the ground in Louisville, Kentucky. Another 23 people on the ground were injured in the wreck.

After the initial investigation, the NTSB found that fatigue cracks in the engine-mount hardware caused the engine to separate from the airplane’s wing as the plane lifted off the runway. The plane climbed just 30 feet before it crashed. The jet had a full tank of fuel, resulting in a half-mile-long burn field of debris.

The NTSB hearing sought to determine the facts and circumstances of transportation accidents or incidents under investigation, including reporting practices for maintenance and inspections, operational safety processes, design systems for pylon attachments, and certification requirements for the attachments.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chair Jennifer Homendy as she heads the NTSB and investigations into crashes.
  • For NTSB members and investigators as they seek answers regarding design systems and maintenance procedures to prevent similar incidents.
  • For God’s comfort for the families who lost loved ones in the Louisville crash.
