The upper chamber of Congress conducted a vote-a-rama over Wednesday night.
The U.S. Senate passed a resolution that provides the framework to pass a filibuster-proof bill to fund immigration enforcement. The senators worked overnight Wednesday in what is termed a vote-a-rama, in which they vote on a succession of amendments. The final vote occurred just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
The measure, introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, would bypass the minority party, which has blocked funding that has resulted in the longest-ever partial government shutdown. The Department of Homeland Security has been unfunded since mid-February.
The resolution would give the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Judiciary Committee until May 15 to create reconciliation legislation to provide up to $70 billion. The House Homeland Security and Judiciary panels would write similar bills, so that, after both chambers pass their respective resolutions, they could begin reconciling them.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Majority Leader Thune as he presides over the Senate and brings legislation to the floor for a vote.
- For Speaker Johnson as he determines the legislative priorities of the House.
- For members of Congress to put the safety and security of the homeland ahead of partisan concerns.
