New memo sets targets for reactor development on the Moon and in orbit by the end of the decade

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy issued a directive calling on federal agencies to pursue nuclear power systems for space use, including reactors on the Moon by 2030 and smaller orbital systems by 2028. The memo tasks agencies such as NASA and the Department of Energy (DOE) with coordinating the development of long-duration power sources intended to support future lunar operations and deep-space missions where solar power may be limited.

“Nuclear power in space will give us the sustained electricity, heating, and propulsion essential to a permanent presence on the Moon, Mars, and beyond,” the science policy office stated. The memo frames nuclear space power as “essential to advancing U.S. efforts in space exploration, commerce, and defense applications.”

Officials said the plan is part of a broader U.S. space strategy as other nations also pursue lunar infrastructure. Reports noted China and Russia have announced joint plans for a lunar nuclear facility later in the 2030s. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the directive advances long-term exploration goals, while the timeline would require significant design, testing, and deployment efforts in the coming years.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For NASA Administrator Isaacman and agency officials as they pursue scientific progress in lunar power.
  • For officials in NASA, the Energy Department, and other federal agencies as they develop space strategies.
  • That international cooperation reduces conflict and promotes the responsible use of new technologies.
