The agency will automatically review eligibility after recent court rulings.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced steps to help veterans access additional education benefits following federal court rulings in Rudisill v. McDonough and Perkins v. Collins. The decisions may allow eligible veterans to receive up to 12 additional months of benefits, with a combined maximum of 48 months under the Montgomery GI Bill and Post-9/11 GI Bill programs. The department said it will automatically review eligibility rather than requiring veterans to request assessments and will prioritize cases involving students with limited remaining benefits.
“These court decisions will influence the educational choices of millions of people, and VA is working to ensure Veterans know what they qualify for and how to claim their benefits,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.
The VA also said it is updating automated adjudication systems to apply the Perkins ruling and plans to review veteran records for additional entitlement. In the interim, VA will continue approving initial benefit periods and notify veterans if they qualify for extended coverage.
