CMS Moves to Phase Out Fax Machines and Snail Mail

Administrator Oz said that old standards for data sharing were not on par with current technological advances.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is simplifying their administrative processes by removing fax and mail options. The Administrative Simplification; Adoption of Standards for Health Care Claims Attachments Transactions and Electronic Signatures Final Rule is projected to save the wider healthcare industry approximately $781 million. This rule will establish a national standard for the electronic exchange of documentation used to support health care claims.

The standards will be applied by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) covered entities, which include health care providers that perform electronic transactions.

“The futuristic medical breakthroughs we’ve achieved, like augmented reality glasses that give surgeons X-ray vision, shouldn’t have to coexist with administrative systems that often lag decades behind,“ said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “This new rule will modernize American healthcare by standardizing electronic claims attachments and enabling secure electronic signatures. Because every minute providers save on paperwork is another minute they can spend caring for patients.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Administrator Oz to have prudence in his application of technological updates to the health sector.
  • For CMS officials as they prepare to apply the new rule and transition large parts of the healthcare industry to electronic paperwork.
