The agency is focused on how scammers are obtaining phone numbers.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr announced that the commission will be expanding certification and disclosure requirements for entities that obtain phone numbers. The goal is to increase visibility by increasing oversight on how phone numbers are obtained and used, so that scammers are prevented from exploiting gaps in the system.
“The Enforcement Bureau has found that the majority of its robocall investigations have involved resold numbers,“ Chairman Carr stated. “We are looking at how these actors are obtaining numbers and proposing ways to restrict them. Specifically, we seek comment on restricting the resale of numbers to a single level to prevent the types of abuse we are seeing in the marketplace today.”
The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeks comments on and evaluations regarding “assigned numbering resources are used, reported, and resold by service providers.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Chairman Carr as he oversees efforts to stop Americans from being defrauded by scamming networks.
- For FCC officials as they review cases of scam calls across the U.S. and increase restrictions on number acquisition.
