The agreement focuses on education about treatments for genitourinary symptoms and recurrent urinary infections.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between its Office on Women’s Health (OWH) and the American Urological Association, along with affiliated organizations, including the Urology Care Foundation and American Urological Education and Research. The agreement will expand education for clinicians and patients about evidence-based treatments for conditions affecting some postmenopausal women, including genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Under the collaboration, the organizations will share research, develop educational materials, and promote awareness among health care providers and the public about treatment options such as localized estrogen therapy.
“This collaboration represents an important step forward in addressing a significant and often undertreated women’s health concern,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health and Director of the HHS Office on Women’s Health Dorothy Fink. “Many postmenopausal women are not aware that local estrogen therapy is a safe and effective treatment for GSM and recurrent UTIs. By joining forces with the AUA, we can ensure that clinicians and patients alike have access to clear, evidence-based guidance.”
