Waiting

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. – Psalm 40:3

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt stuck, like you could not get out of it? It can be very discouraging to feel like your efforts to resolve a major problem are made in vain. Who do you turn to when something like this happens?

David understood how it felt to be stuck in a “pit” of miry clay. He described how God brought him out in Psalm 40. Despite his best efforts, David could not find his way out on his own. So he waited patiently and trusted that God would deliver him. David then spends the rest of Psalm 40 praising God with a new song after being delivered. David’s psalm is a reminder of who God is. God is the Deliverer! There is no pit too deep nor situation too complicated for God to enter into with you.

In the New Testaent, Mary and Martha sent for Jesus, who had healed so many, when their brother Lazarus became ill (John 11:1-44). As they waited for Him, the situation turned hopeless, as Lazarus died and was buried. When Jesus arrived, He told Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life“ (v. 25). He then brought their brother back from the dead, for God to be glorified (vv. 4, 43-44)! Though your situation may look bleak, the Creator has not forgotten you. In the midst of waiting, remember that the Lord is with you and will resolve the situation in His perfect timing. And you can look forward to the joy that people, such as David, Martha, and Mary, experienced when God resolved their circumstances.

The Lord is always good and He continues to work all things together for good (Romans 8:28). Trust God to deliver you, and that He will give you reason to rejoice. Whether you are in a season of waiting or you are glorifying Him from the mountain top, there is reason to praise the Lord today. Pray as well for believers in Washington, D.C., to seek and wait for God’s deliverance in the difficult situations they face.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 40:3

He put a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
    and put their trust in the Lord.

Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
    for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
    have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has made known his salvation;
    he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
    to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
    the salvation of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
    break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
    with the lyre and the sound of melody!
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
    make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
    the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the rivers clap their hands;
    let the hills sing for joy together
before the Lord, for he comes
    to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
    and the peoples with equity.
