DHS Secretary Reports Discovery of Spyware on Government Devices

The department is conducting an internal review, and a legal examination is underway.

Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem recently disclosed that surveillance software had been installed on government-issued devices assigned to her and other political appointees within her department.

Secretary Noem expressed appreciation to Elon Musk and his technology specialists, who assisted in identifying the software. She said that internal reviews and personnel actions followed and that the department has since taken steps to strengthen oversight of its information systems.

“So one of the things I need to do and continue to do is partner with technology companies and experts to bring them in and help us because many times in government and especially in this department, which was extremely neglected, we were just behind and not up to the standard we should be at,” said Secretary Noem.

The secretary also reported discovering a previously unidentified Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) room at Homeland Security headquarters that contained classified materials. She said the matter has been referred to attorneys for further examination.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Noem and DHS leadership as they review internal security practices.
  • For the heads of federal agencies as they oversee the handling of sensitive information.
  • For U.S. national security officials as they seek to ensure appropriate transparency and lawful conduct, and build public trust.
