FEMA Assists in Sewage Spill Cleanup

Repairs to the damaged sewage line are expected to take 9-10 months to complete.

President Donald Trump announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is helping clean up 200-300 million gallons of sewage that were spilled into the Potomac River in January. The sewer line located in Montgomery County, Maryland, collapsed on January 19, which resulted in approximately 243 million gallons of raw sewage and wastewater being inadvertently released into the Potomac.

The president has instructed FEMA to provide “all necessary Management, Direction, and Coordination to protect the Potomac.”

Public health officials have stated that the spillage has not impacted drinking water quality, but residents are still encouraged to avoid having any contact with the river water. A temporary bypass has been constructed to prevent further sewage from flowing into the river, but permanent repairs are expected to take up to 10 months to complete.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump as he directs federal officials to coordinate the cleanup effort.
  • For Maryland Governor Wes Moore and other state leaders as they collaborate with FEMA to clean up the river and repair the damaged sewage pipe.
  • For members of FEMA who will be assisting in the cleanup in Maryland, currently without pay due to the lapse in congressional appropriations.
