Secretary of State Issues Visa Restrictions on European Officials Over Censorship

Secretary Rubio cites concerns about overseas actions affecting U.S.-based platforms and speakers.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently announced new visa restrictions targeting five European officials who were involved in efforts to pressure U.S. technology companies to restrict certain American speech, according to the U.S. State Department.

Secretary Rubio stated, “The State Department will take steps to bar leading figures of the global censorship-industrial complex from entering the United States. We stand ready and willing to expand this list if others do not reverse course.”

Secretary Rubio said the decision reflects the administration’s position that foreign governments should not attempt to regulate or influence speech by U.S. companies outside their own jurisdictions. The department stated the move was a response to what it described as extraterritorial actions affecting U.S. sovereignty, without disclosing the identities of those impacted by the restrictions.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Rubio as he addresses attempts by European leaders to censor the speech of U.S. businesses.
  • State Department officials as they manage diplomatic disagreements involving speech and cross-border regulation.
  • For legislators who are considering how to address conflicts between national laws and global digital platforms.
