Education Department Signs Interagency Reassignment Agreements

Education Secretary McMahon signing
Secretary McMahon says they are “cutting through layers of red tape” as some programs and employees are transferred to other U.S. departments.

The Department of Education announced six new interagency agreements with the Departments of Labor, Interior, Health and Human Services, and State that will keep the Education Department in compliance with federal statutes while reducing its footprint. The department stated that the shifting of programs and employees is intended to streamline federal education activities, reduce the burden on the administration, and refocus programs and activities to better serve students.

“The Trump administration is taking bold action to break up the federal education bureaucracy and return education to the states,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said. “Cutting through layers of red tape in Washington is one essential piece of our final mission.”

Secretary McMahon stated that the employee transfers to other agencies are being done “on a temporary basis,” to provide a proof-of-concept to Congress. The president’s administration will then likely call for Congress to pass legislation officially shutting down the Department of Education.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for Secretary McMahon as she facilitates the shift of responsibilities to other agencies.
  • For wisdom for those in the Education Department and other agencies as they implement this transition of programs.
  • For members of Congress as they hear arguments for whether or not the Education Department should be eliminated.
