Senate Advances Measure to End Government Shutdown

The resolution would fund some departments through the end of the current fiscal year.

The Senate finally reached sufficient bipartisan support to advance a continuing resolution to temporarily fund the federal government.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated, “I am optimistic that after almost six weeks of this shutdown, we will finally be able to end it.”

The deal is set to be amended to temporarily fund the government through January 30, 2026. It would also provide funding for defense construction, the USDA, Veterans Affairs, and the legislative branch through the end of fiscal year 2026.

“I understand that not all of my… colleagues are satisfied with this agreement, but waiting another week or another month wouldn’t deliver a better outcome. It would only mean more harm for families in New Hampshire,” Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire said.

She continued, “This was the only deal on the table. It was our best chance to reopen the government and immediately begin negotiations to extend the ACA tax credits.” She said the deal gives her party an opportunity to continue the fight for the extension of the healthcare subsidies.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for the members of the House and Senate as they deliberate over the updated details of the continuing resolution.
  • For House Speaker Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Thune as they negotiate the specifics of the government reopening legislation.
