Speaker Johnson

President Donald Trump has continued to encourage the Senate to change the filibuster so that a simple majority can end the now-longest-ever U.S. government shutdown. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he will circumvent Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and talk directly to members of the minority party to get the government funded.

Speaker Johnson stated, “We are going ABOVE the heads of so-called ‘leadership,’ and appealing to the consciences of a handful of people in the Senate who want to do the right thing, and just STOP THE PAIN for the American people!”

There have been 14 unsuccessful votes in the Senate to temporarily fund the government, as the minority insists on the extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies that expire at the end of this year. Speaker Johnson has determined that the House will not vote on any legislation until the Senate passes the continuing resolution, though he and Senate Majority Leader Thune are considering extending the temporary funding beyond November 21.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker Johnson and other members of Congress as they advocate for funding the government.
  • For Senate Majority Leader Thune as he seeks to get the continuing resolution passed to fund the government.
  • For wisdom for President Trump and members of his administration as they assess options to keep vital agencies functioning during the shutdown.
