Criminal complaint alleges Gaza-based operative entered U.S. on fraudulent visa and participated in 2023 assault in Israel.
Federal authorities announced the arrest of a Gazan man living in Louisiana for his participation in the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault on Israel before entering the U.S. under false pretenses. The criminal complaint alleges that Mahmoud Amin Ya-qub Al-Muhtadi was a members of a paramilitary group said to have joined Hamas in the attack in which roughly 1,200 people were killed and about 250 hostages were captured.
Investigators claim Al-Muhtadi coordinated armed individuals to cross into Israel on the day of the attack and that his phone was located near Kibbutz Kfar Aza, one of the massacre sites.
“Al-Muhtadi is an operative for the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine’s (‘DLFP’) military wing, the National Resistance Brigades (‘NRB’, also known as the ‘Martyr Umar al-Qasim Forces’), a Gaza-based paramilitary group that participated in the Hamas-led terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, 2023,” the Justice Department affidavit stated.
Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg said that the Gazan man “fraudulently obtained a visa to enter the United States where he hoped to remain undetected.”
The man now faces charges of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and committing visa fraud. The FBI, working with federal prosecutors in the Western District of Louisiana, is leading the investigation.
