Federal Coal Lease Sale in Alabama Generates Over $46 Million

Bureau awards leases for metallurgical coal production; revenues to be shared between Alabama and the U.S. Treasury.

The U.S. Department of the Interior announced that a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lease sale in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, brought in more than $46 million and opened access to about 53 million tons of metallurgical coal across 14,000 acres of federal land. Metallurgical coal is used primarily in steel production. The leases are expected to generate additional income through federal royalties, rents, and state severance taxes, with proceeds divided equally between the State of Alabama and the U.S. Treasury.

“This lease sale is another example of how the Department of the Interior is delivering on President Trump’s commitment to unleash American energy, strengthen rural economies, and secure fair returns for the American people,” said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. “By expanding access to America’s world-class metallurgical coal reserves, we are creating good-paying jobs, supporting domestic steel production, and reinforcing our nation’s Energy Dominance.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Burgum to receive God’s wisdom as he heads the Interior Department and its many agencies.
  • For Principal Deputy Director Groffy and Deputy Director Nedd as they oversee the Bureau of Land Management.
