A state representative has been chosen to head the board overseeing the Nation’s Report Card.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon has appointed Tennessee State Representative Mark White as chair of the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB), which oversees the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as The Nation’s Report Card. Secretary McMahon also named early literacy specialist Kymyona Burk and Virginia elementary school principal Michael Sidebotham to the board, while educational measurement expert Scott Marion was reappointed for another term. Their four-year appointments began October 1.
The board determines which subjects and grades NAEP assesses and sets performance benchmarks that provide data on student achievement across the country. Recent NAEP results in reading, math, and science revealed continuing declines in student performance since the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The 2024 NAEP results confirmed a devastating trend – American students are falling behind at alarming rates and achievement gaps are wider than ever before,“ said Secretary McMahon. “I am proud to appoint these education professionals who have deep expertise in testing best practices, education reform, and early learning development.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary McMahon as she appoints individuals to positions in the Department of Education.
- For the new members of the National Assessment Governing Board to be discerning as they fulfill their roles.
