Judge Deborah Boardman, Maryland U.S. District Court

Judge Deborah Boardman

Maryland U.S. District Court

Deborah Lynn Boardman was born in 1974 in Silver Spring, Maryland. She earned an undergraduate degree from Villanova University and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. She clerked for a judge in the Eastern Virginia U.S. District Court, then entered private practice.

Boardman became first assistant federal public defender in the District of Maryland. She was selected as U.S. magistrate judge in the District of Maryland in 2019.

Boardman was nominated by President Joe Biden to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. She was confirmed by the Senate and received her commission in June 2021.

In the News…

Maryland District Judge Deborah Boardman agreed to the sentencing request from the attorneys of the transgender person who was convicted of an assassination attempt against Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022. While federal sentencing guidelines recommend a minimum of 30 years for such a conviction, the judge removed terrorism enhancements and applied a sentence of only 8 years, with lifelong supervised release.

After the defendant pleaded guilty, Judge Boardman stated that the fact that Nicholas Roske, who goes by the name Sophie Roske, abandoned the plan, called 911 to self-report, and turned himself in justified lowering the sentence.

Using the defendant’s preferred pronouns, Judge Boardman ruled, “Though she got far too close to executing her plans, the fact remains that she abandoned them.”

The judge did affirm the “real harm caused to Justice Kavanaugh and his family” from Roske’s actions in announcing the sentence.

Prior to the release of the decision in 2022, Roske had texted, “im gonna stop roe v wade from being overturned” by deciding to “remove some people from the supreme court.” He messaged, “at least one, which would change the votes for decades to come,” and that he was “shooting for 3.”
