Being Named

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.  – Romans 10:17

When someone calls your name, do you ignore them? Hardly! In Genesis, you see a beautiful story of God bringing animals to Adam to see what he would call them. He named them based on their essence or observable qualities. You also have that kind of name.

Your parents gave you a name that you know very well. Your friends may nickname you by the quirks and qualities of your unique relationship. You display a type of public moniker with outward attitudes and opinions. Your good deeds provide an honorable name, though sin tries to label you with shame. The sum total is an identity authentically you, your real name, the name only God knows.

Through Christ, God reveals His name to you also! He is known as Savior, Friend, Comforter, Healer, and Companion. He calls you into a deep relationship where you are fully known AND fully loved. Can you hear Him calling your name? Your connection to Christ brings your faith alive.

Today, instead of engaging in the labeling and name-calling that is going on, pray for those in positions of authority. Ask God to help you discern who will be fitting to hold public office in the next U.S. election cycle by observing what candidates say and do, rather than by their fame or name. Pray for those serving in government to hear God’s calling in their life and respond by following Christ as their guide. Listen carefully, so this country may continue as one nation under God.

Today’s Verse: Romans 10:17

Therefore my people shall know my name. Therefore in that day they shall know that it is I who speak; here I am.”

How beautiful upon the mountains
    are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness,
    who publishes salvation,
    who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice;
    together they sing for joy;
for eye to eye they see
    the return of the Lord to Zion.
Break forth together into singing,
    you waste places of Jerusalem,
for the Lord has comforted his people;
    he has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 The Lord has bared his holy arm
    before the eyes of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth shall see
    the salvation of our God.
