He reported that President Xi greenlit the upcoming deal to divest U.S. TikTok operations to investors.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday allowing TikTok to continue operating in the United States, a policy reversal leading up to the purchase of the social media app by American entrepreneurs. While no information about the details of the trade deal has been made public, President Trump said that the final terms were recently approved by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“I spoke with President Xi,” President Trump said. “We had a good talk, I told him what we were doing, and he said go ahead with it.”
President Trump had begun questioning the security of the China-based social media app during his first term. Since the start of his second term, the president extended the deadline for a ban of the app four times before the company agreed to a closed-door sale.
President Trump has said Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox Corporation, and “probably four or five absolutely world-class investors” would be the people purchasing the app.
