NIH to End Funding for Research Using Aborted Human Tissue

Seventeen grants, initially approved under the Biden administration, will not be renewed beyond 2026

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that federal grants supporting research involving aborted human infant tissue will be phased out. Currently, 17 active NIH grants, the majority authorized under President Biden’s administration, continue through 2026 and received a combined $22 million in 2024.

“NIH takes this issue very seriously and remains committed to the highest ethical standards in research. The referenced grants, initiated under the Biden administration, will not be renewed,” the agency stated. “NIH is guided by a commitment to valuing human life and ensuring that federally funded research is conducted responsibly and transparently. We are actively reviewing these matters and will take all necessary steps to ensure our policies reflect that commitment.”

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. had pledged during his confirmation to end federal support for research using fetal tissue. A House appropriations subcommittee responsible for NIH funding approved a spending bill earlier this month that stated, “None of the funds provided in this Act may be used to conduct or support research using human fetal tissue if such tissue is obtained pursuant to an induced abortion.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of Congress as they evaluate where taxpayer dollars are being used and make changes to the allotments of federal funding.
  • For Director Jay Bhattacharya to seek God’s guidance as he heads the National Institutes of Health.
