In the News…

General Xavier Brunson, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, discussed the electronic jamming the U.S. and allied forces face on the Korean Peninsula. At the AFCEA TechNet Indo-Pacific, the general stated that it is one of the most “violently contested electromagnetic environments on the planet.”

General Brunson said, “Our adversaries practice electronic attack daily. They jam GPS in the West Sea. They attempt to blind our servers, our sensors, and our networks.”

Referring to the actions of North Korea, the commander stated that “across the demilitarized zone” American forces face a “nuclear-armed adversary that constitutionally designates the Republic of Korea (South Korea) as its principal enemy.” China has also developed advanced electronic attack capabilities. He said that U.S. Forces South Korea is using high-frequency networks alongside proliferated low-Earth orbit satellite communications and terrestrial mesh networks to maintain command and control.

General Brunson highlighted the need for such resilient and redundant capabilities, stating, “If your capability requires pristine satellite communications, infinite bandwidth, and uninterrupted fiber optic backbone to function, it will not survive 48 hours on the peninsula.”
