In the News…

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon proposed a plan to impose an excise tax on data centers and limit their use of tax credits for depreciation, research and development, investments in Opportunity Zones, and real estate investment trust benefits. He previously introduced legislation to ban the constructing of data centers on public lands.

Senator Wyden stated, “Americans feel the looming fear of AI job losses, and Congress has a responsibility to help the country prepare. These are not the only policy changes that are needed to protect American workers from economic disruption, but it’s a needed first step to give families the wage security they deserve in this time of high costs and economic uncertainty.”

“American communities are rightfully questioning whether the rapid buildout of data centers across the nation will benefit them, as local disruptions rise and Americans grow concerned about the long-term career prospects of millions of workers,” Senator Wyden said earlier this year. “These proposals are a first step towards safeguarding taxpayer dollars and ensuring there are resources to support American workers displaced by the coming disruptions to the economy.”
