The U.S. Supreme Court overturned lower court decisions that the state of Missouri must use the congressional district map from 2022 for the November midterm election instead of the map that was updated by the state legislature last year. A district judge and a panel of the Eighth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals had ruled that the new map should be used, since it was the one under which the primary elections were held in August.
“In short, as a matter of state law, the 2022 map – not the 2025 map – must be used in the 2026 Congressional election,” the high court’s unsigned order stated, which included no dissents. “At this late date, ordering reversion to the 2025 map in the midst of an ongoing election would usher in electoral chaos.“
The Supreme Court justices also urged lower courts to refrain from any further orders for Missouri to use the 2025 map. The Supreme Court had previously ruled in a separate case that the 2022 map must be used.
The State Supreme Court had already ordered the earlier map be used in November due to a pending petition to place the adoption of the new map on the ballot for a statewide vote, despite the primaries taking place for the updated districts.
