The bill would allow federal funding to be withheld from cities if certain safety protocols are not met.
U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty introduced the Safe Transit Act to improve safety measures for those using public transit. The new legislation would create incentives for cities that receive federal transit funding to adopt stronger crime-prevention measures and establish a safety performance benchmark.
The bill would also penalize lax public safety policies, withholding federal funding from any transit system that fails to meet the benchmarks and safety protocols. The legislation would set national standards to prevent fare jumping, require urban transit agencies to invest at least 3 percent of their federal funding toward safety and crime-prevention initiatives, and require all new vehicles to be equipped with security cameras and recorders.
Senator Hagerty said, “My legislation would direct federal funding to communities that actually protect passengers and promote public safety. It’s time to put Americans’ safety first.”
