House Approves Russia Sanctions Bill

The legislation gives President Trump authority to impose tariffs on nations that purchase Russian oil and gas.

The House of Representatives voted to pass legislation, named for the late Senator Lindsey Graham, that authorizes President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on countries that are importing Russian oil and gas. The measure is intended to eliminate the energy revenue that has supported Russia’s continued war on Ukraine.

“Congress must do everything in its power to ensure that a democratic Ukraine wins the war against an authoritarian Russia,” Representative Dan Goldman of New York stated. “If the United States is to remain a global leader for democracy, we must be definitive and unwavering in our support for our democratic ally Ukraine and continue to strongly oppose Vladimir Putin. Our bill is likely our one opportunity to do that for the foreseeable future.”

The legislation now goes to President Trump for his signature, since the Senate approved the measure prior to its August recess. The bill also extends the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 through 2031.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for President Trump as he receives the bill to extend Iranian sanctions and impose tariffs on importers of Russian energy.
  • For discernment for members of Congress as they consider measures to increase pressure on hostile nations.
