Twenty-five years ago today, The Presidential Prayer Team officially began.
The announcement had gone out the day before. It was Monday, September 17, 2001 — six days after the attacks — and the country was still looking for answers, for comfort, and for a next step. What was offered was a place to pray.
The work behind that invitation had started days earlier. On Thursday the question was asked: Can a website be ready by Monday, able to welcome as many as 20 million visitors? A small team of engineers in five states, using servers in ten locations, worked through the next 72 hours without stopping. They could move that fast because the idea was not new that week. Months earlier, a few faithful men meeting for prayer had been prompted to prepare a way for the nation to pray for the President and those in authority, as Scripture directs in 1 Timothy 2:1–2. When America needed somewhere to turn, the door was already being built.
On September 18 the ministry opened. People came by the tens of thousands an hour.
