The senator served in the U.S. Air Force as well as on congressional armed services committees.
The Pentagon has proposed renaming the South Carolina military installation Joint Base Charleston in honor of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Senator Graham served in the U.S. Air Force and the South Carolina Air National Guard, retiring in 2015 as a colonel. During his tenure in the U.S. Senate, he was co-chair of the National Guard Caucus.
Air Force Secretary Troy Meinke stated in a memo, “[Graham’s] steadfast advocacy was instrumental in modernizing our military infrastructure and enhancing aviation security, ensuring that Joint Base Charleston remains as one of America’s premier military installations.” He continued that renaming the base after Senator Graham “would memorialize his legacy as a statesman who united military service, aerospace innovation, economic development and commercial aviation.”
Senator Graham had just returned from a trip to Ukraine when he experienced an aortic dissection on July 11.
