The operations include on foreign citizens who have overstayed their visas.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have begun enforcement operations in at least 15 airports across the United States. The move is an expansion of a partnership between ICE and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and includes arresting foreign citizens with expired visas as well as those with outstanding deportation orders.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said, “This administration is working diligently to ensure that aliens in our country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of our country to self-deport.”
Pending asylum applications do not provide legal residency status. An ICE official stated, “A ‘work permit’ and/or a pending asylum case does NOT confer any type of legal status in the United States or prevent ICE from arresting or deporting an illegal alien from the country.”
