Marco Rubio
Secretary of State
Marco Antonio Rubio was born in May 1971 in Miami, Florida. His parents were Cubans who immigrated to the U.S. He attended Tarkio College in Missouri for a year on a football scholarship before enrolling at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida. He later earned an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Florida and received a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law. He interned with a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Rubio was elected to a seat as a city commissioner for West Miami before becoming a member of the Florida House of Representatives, where he served eight years, two as the Speaker. He was elected to the United States Senate, assuming office in January 2011.
Rubio was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump for Secretary of State prior to his inauguration in 2025. The Senate confirmed Rubio the day President Trump was sworn in and Rubio was sworn into office the following morning.
Rubio is married to Jeanette Dousdebes, and they have four children. He is a Catholic.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio hosted the Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism at the State Department in Washington, D.C., this month. Over 60 foreign ministers and officials attended the event to focus on the increasing international threat of terrorism and political violence.
Secretary Rubio said, “The most essential duty of the state – the first responsibility, frankly, of any government of any kind – is the protection of its people, is the protection of its country. This is a sacred obligation that should transcend all political and all ideological divisions.”
The secretary of state said that while counterterrorism efforts against jihadist terrorism have largely worked, “Our counterterrorism doctrine has had a blind spot – a blind spot when it comes to extremist violence from the political left.”
“The very idea that far-left terrorism could be a serious threat is treated as a right-wing fever dream, or worse, as a dangerous fascist conspiracy,” Secretary Rubio continued. “In spite of the clear and the undeniable reality, in spite of the objective numbers and statistics, in spite of the fact that in this room today there are representatives from across the political spectrum, we will hear this organized – that this kind of organized violence and terror will be dismissed. It will be dismissed as a partisan fiction.”
Secretary Rubio recounted numerous instances of international political violence, including vandalism and murder, saying, “It does exist, and we’re actually underestimating it, and our nations bear the scars to prove it.“
“We have no choice but to confront this menace together. We will either cooperate across our borders or the terrorists will continue to exploit the gaps between them,” Secretary Rubio explained. “ The United States is building the infrastructure, the partnership, and the strategy to defeat the scourge of far-left terror.“
