The Civil Division is working to ensure that only U.S. citizens vote in federal elections.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division announced earlier this month that election monitors would be deployed to 15 jurisdictions in Arizona, Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Virginia during the primary election season.
The assistant attorney general highlighted the longstanding practice of presidential administrations deploying election monitors, as they were sent to nine jurisdictions for the 2022 primaries and twenty-seven during the 2024 elections.
The Department of Justice also sent warning letters to election officials nationwide regarding the consequences of knowingly allowing noncitizens to vote in federal elections. The letter stated that election officials “could be criminally prosecuted for aiding and abetting” noncitizen voting.
A department spokesperson stated, “The Department sent these letters to all 50 states and the District of Columbia, asking for voluntary compliance in a timely manner with their obligations under federal law to ensure only citizens vote in federal elections.”
