Officials say devices will take scientific discovery from “months to minutes.”
The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has revealed plans to develop two supercomputers as part of the Genesis Mission. The two units, Mission and Vision, are to be built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise using the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform.
The NVIDIA core will be sent to Los Alamos National Laboratory for initial testing with project collaborators on site. This central processing unit (CPU) will support high-performance computing and agentic artificial intelligence. Los Alamos and NVIDIA have been partners in the effort to expand CPU’s technological capabilities, using less energy for higher output.
NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams said, “The Genesis Mission calls for exactly these kinds of partnerships to meet the urgency our mission demands. By codesigning these systems alongside HPE and NVIDIA from the ground up, we’re building the tools that will allow our scientists and engineers to reduce the time needed for discovery from months to minutes. This is how we accelerate production and deliver for the American people.”
