Mayor Mamdani stated he was not aware of the scheduled meeting.
The U.S. Department of State canceled a planned meeting between New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration and the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations. A commissioner from the mayor’s Office of International Affairs had scheduled the meeting before federal authorities intervened.
The State Department reported, “We appreciate the mayor understanding the value of diplomacy, and for his decision to cancel this meeting. It is unconscionable that a New York City official would even consider meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to the U.N., a man who consistently works to undermine U.S. interests and whitewash his regime’s crimes against the United States, our allies, and Iran’s own citizens.”
Mayor Mamdani responded to press inquiries, saying, “That meeting did not take place, it will not take place, and I did not know about it until there was a press inquiry regarding it.”
Since the United Nations is hosted in New York City, the mayor’s Office of International Affairs usually coordinates diplomatic events with the State Department and federal officials. This is the reported second instance of Mayor Mamdani’s administration attempting to engage in international relations without federal authorization.
Mayor Mamdani had also scheduled a meeting with Colombian President Gustavo Petro last month, before the State Department halted the event.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Rubio and State Department officials as they seek to ensure state and local leaders comply with federal authority regarding international relations.
- For state and municipal officials to be discerning in their endeavors to engage with foreign ministers.
