Senator McConnell Reveals Reason for Hospitalization

He says he experienced a fall and then contracted pneumonia.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky released a statement explaining the health circumstances surrounding his hospitalization since mid-June. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear had requested an update from the U.S. senator after members of his party reported speaking with him over the phone.

Senator McConnell stated, “Over the past several weeks, Elaine and I have appreciated both your well wishes and your honest questions about what was keeping me away from the Senate.”

“You all know how folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older. Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct – I can’t help it,” Senator McConnell continued. He explained, “Last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital.”

He said that the doctors “have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.”

The senator said that he has “been a good patient” and is “continuing to do everything [the doctors] ask to speed my recovery.” He reported that he has moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center. Senator McConnell said it will take time before he can return to the Senate to vote, but that he is engaged in Senate business and constituent services.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For continued healing for Senator McConnell and wisdom for his physicians.
  • For Majority Leader Thune to preside over the upper chamber of Congress with discernment.
  • For senators and representatives to be transparent regarding their health and ability to represent their constituents.
