In the News…
U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll recently announced the launch of the service’s Low-Cost Interceptor (LCI) program. The affordable interceptors are intended to supplement existing multimillion-dollar air defense systems and reduce the cost of engagement.
The Army secretary said his service is accelerating the timeline, seeking companies to develop solutions within six months and begin production within a year. The effort is the result of conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, in which the costly air defense missiles have been used to destroy relatively inexpensive drones.
Secretary Driscoll noted that while the capabilities of high-end air defense systems are “the Ferrari of a product,” the LCIs will provide the Army with a mass-producible, budget-friendly alternative for prolonged, high-rate attrition conflicts.
