Ted Lieu
U.S. Representative for California
Ted Win-Ping Lieu was born in March 1969 in Taipei, Taiwan. His family emigrated to the U.S. when he was three and lived in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned undergraduate degrees from Stanford University and received his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University.
He clerked for a judge on the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals before joining the U.S. Air Force and serving in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He was elected to the Torrance City Council and then won a seat on the California State Assembly. He was later elected to the California State Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for state attorney general.
Lieu was elected to the House of Representatives in 2014.
Lieu is married to Betty, and they have two sons. He is Catholic.

Representative Ted Lieu of California, Vice Chair of the Democratic House Commission on AI and the Innovation Economy, issued a joint statement with Representatives Valerie Foushee of North Carolina and Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, rejecting their colleague’s cosponsorship of a bipartisan artificial intelligence framework. The bill would preempt state laws regarding AI development for three years.
Congressman Lieu’s group stated, “The House Commission on AI and the Innovation Economy has spent months working closely with our colleagues and key stakeholders from civil society organizations, industry, labor, academia, and others addressing AI issues. Many of those same organizations share our view that this document cannot serve as the basis for productive dialogue.”
Representative Lieu said that, while regulating AI is urgent, “In Congress, you have to build a consensus. You actually have to get groups and members of Congress and organizations to support what you’re trying to do.“
He continued, “By the end of the year, we’ll have a framework to propose to Leader [Hakeem] Jeffries.”
