FAA Completes First Phase of Pilot Alert System Overhaul

After a system failure in 2023, NOTAM has been uploaded to the cloud.

Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean Duffy announced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has completed the first phase of the overhaul to the Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) system. As part of the Phase 1 plan for NOTAM’s overhaul, the system has been moved to the cloud. NOTAMs are advisory notifications to aviation personnel that concern flight operations, but are not known far enough in advance to be published by other means, including notices of hazards and changes in facilities or conditions.

The old NOTAM system was decades old and vulnerable to failures. Systems became unreliable on January 10th, 2023, eventually leading to a full shutdown on January 11th, 2023, which kept flights grounded across the country. The system had been projected to fail by late 2027.

“The last administration handed us a 40-year-old aviation alert system on the verge of complete collapse,” said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “Instead of waiting for another nationwide ground stop, we moved at the Speed of Trump to build a brand new, modern system — and we did it years ahead of schedule.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Administrator Bedford as he oversees the overhaul to the NOTAM system.
  • For Secretary Duffy as he seeks to ensure air travel safety across the nation.
  • For U.S. technical personnel working on NOTAM for discernment as they update and upgrade the system.
