President Trump Reestablishes Presidential Fitness Test

White House promotes youth athletics, school fitness testing, and upcoming international sporting events for National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

President Donald Trump issued a proclamation recognizing May 2026 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, outlining administration efforts related to athletics, nutrition, and youth fitness. The proclamation referenced the restoration of the Presidential Fitness Test and the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, as well as executive actions involving school athletics and college sports policies. It also highlighted upcoming events, including the FIFA World Cup, Olympic Games, and other athletic competitions scheduled to take place in the U.S. over the next several years.

At a White House event, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Presidential Fitness Test will become mandatory in Department of Defense Education Activity schools located on military installations. The updated assessment includes exercises such as push-ups, planks, pull-ups, shuttle runs, and timed distance runs.

“We should be in shape; we should compete,” Secretary Hegseth said.

Officials said the initiative is intended to encourage physical activity and fitness among students, while discussions surrounding youth health and military readiness continue nationally.
