HRSA Advances Modernization Efforts in Organ Transplant System

The agency shared several planned updates to its organ donor programs and regulations.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced updates to the systems used for the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). The OPTN Modernization Initiative will include regulatory reform, strengthening federal oversight, and ensuring equity and fairness for patients receiving organ donations. The agency highlighted a strengthened patient safety monitoring and reporting system for donors and their families, to allow participants to share key safety issues that may impact future donors.

HRSA Administrator Tom Engels said, “I am deeply grateful to donors and families whose selfless decisions save lives every day. As we honor their generosity, we are committed to strengthening the transplant system to better serve patients. Everyone involved—from HRSA to OPTN members and health care professionals—must meet the highest standards, because donors and patients deserve the very best care.”

Administrator Engels also participated in a recent demonstration of drone technology, which displayed the utilization of drones for the transportation of critical items required for organ donation and transplantation.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Administrator Engels in his role with the HRSA as he oversees the modernization in policy and medical care for organ donors.
  • For HRSA officials as they work on the new updates for organ donors, and transition to new techniques and technologies.
