Members of Congress consider the relevance of the War Powers Act.
Legislators in the Senate and House of Representatives are deliberating the application of the War Powers Act of 1973, under which a president has 60 days to conduct a military action before Congress must sign off on the conflict.
While Congress was officially notified on March 2nd that Operation Epic Fury had begun, President Donald Trump announced the Iran war was over weeks ago, and a Pakistani-brokered ceasefire has been in place since early April.
A White House official stated, “The hostilities that began on Saturday, February 28 have terminated,” adding that “there has been no exchange of fire between U.S. Armed Forces and Iran since Tuesday, April 7.”
The president’s administration has conducted peace talks with the Iranian regime, and continues to deliberate the details each side considers essential for an agreement.
“I don’t think we have an active, kinetic military bombing, firing, or anything like that. Right now, we are trying to broker a peace,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said. “I would be very reluctant to get in front of the administration in the midst of these very sensitive negotiations, so we’ll have to see how that plays out.”
