EPA Launches Initiative to Address PFAS in Drinking Water

PFAS OUT is a cooperative effort to help communities comply with federal drinking water standards in the years to come.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Assistant Administrator for Water Jessica Kramer announced the launch of PFAS OUTreach (PFAS OUT). The initiative will collaborate with 3,000 communities that lack the resources to remove PFOA and PFOS contamination in their water systems. PFAS OUT will help reduce exposure by providing these communities with education and resources, so that the communities will be able to comply with federal drinking water standards in the coming years.

“Protecting Americans from exposure to PFAS in drinking water is a priority for EPA,“ EPA Assistant Administrator Kramer said. “The PFAS OUT initiative [will] help water systems accelerate actions to reduce exposure to PFOA and PFOS. These contaminants are well studied, their health impacts are well understood. Through PFAS OUT, EPA will help protect public health by—for the very first time—proactively engaging with water systems, states, and other partners to address drinking water contamination.”

The EPA stated that the initiative reflects their commitment to “cooperative federalism” for the protection of public health. The Sixth Contaminant Candidate List draft was released for public comment, which will be a tool to propel research and funding under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Assistant Administrator Kramer to seek God’s wisdom as she helps communities achieve better drinking water.
  • For EPA officials and researchers as they coordinate with community leaders addressing PFA contamination nationwide.
