Congresswoman Resigns From House Before Sanctions Hearing

The Ethics Committee was poised to impose consequences on the representative from Florida regarding financial dealings.

Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida resigned her seat in the House of Representatives just before the Ethics Committee convened a sanctions hearing.

Representative Cherfilus-McCormick stated, “Rather than play these political games, I choose to step away so that I can devote my time to fighting for my neighbors in Florida’s 20th district.”

An ethics subcommittee had determined the congresswoman had committed multiple ethics violations surrounding campaign finances. She allegedly redirected federal overpayment from a healthcare business owned by her family into her congressional campaign. The investigation found that she also violated House rules while serving in Congress. A resolution had been introduced to expel Representative Cherfilus-McCormick from the House.

Upon her announcement, Chairman Michael Guest of Mississippi said, “The Committee on Ethics has now lost jurisdiction in this matter. There will not be a sanctions hearing.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the House Ethics Committee as they seek to ensure members of the lower chamber abide by established standards.
  • For Speaker Johnson to be led by the Lord as he oversees House business.
  • For representatives to conduct themselves honestly and with integrity.
